Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol is a depressant that slows down the nervous system. It is a drug that changes the way the mind and body work together and separately. Individuals can become physically and emotionally addicted to its use, and the disease of alcoholism can develop quickly or over a length of time.

When the disease “hijacks” the brain, it can cause irrational behavior, often affecting the alcohol addict’s motivations and love for life. In addition to physical concerns, alcohol dependence can lead to other problems, including:

  • Decreased job performance
  • Legal ramifications related to addiction behaviors (i.e. driving while intoxicated)
  • Other health issues related to alcohol use (i.e. contracting sexually transmitted diseases, cirrhosis of the liver)
  • Harming relationships with spouses, children, friends or other loved ones

Alcohol addiction is a disease to be treated seriously with a combination of medical attention, proven treatment methods and, ultimately, a recovery program of abstinence. Treating alcohol addiction can begin today and Nova Counseling Services can help. We can assist you or a loved one by assessing, diagnosing and treating alcoholism with our intensive residential services.

Causes of Addiction

Family history and genealogy are positively linked to alcohol addiction, as well as repeated substance abuse and depression. Many addicts attempt to blame alcoholism on individuals or traumatic events, but this is untrue. It is a progressive disease and can only be controlled through abstinence.
