Addiction Facts
Addiction is a chronic disease. It is something you did not cause, and that you cannot control. And, most importantly, although addiction to alcohol or drugs cannot be cured, it can be treated.
For family and friends it is helpful to remember this mantra:
I didn’t CAUSE it.
I can’t CONTROL it.
I can’t CURE it.
Addiction Is Serious
Treating addiction is a lifelong process that requires commitment from not only the addict, but also his or her family, friends, spouse, coworkers and other close relations. Without help, the outcomes are predictable and negative. No matter what the addict does, it is important that the family gets help. Someone needs to ask for help first, and that someone is often a member of the family or a close friend.
